Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef Mixture:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

For the Casserole:

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the baking dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the beef mixture: In a skillet, cook ground beef until browned. Add onion, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Remove from heat.
  3. Make the cheese sauce: In a saucepan, whisk together flour and milk until slightly thickened. Stir in sour cream and 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese until smooth.
  4. Assemble the casserole: Layer potatoes, beef mixture, and cheese sauce in the baking dish. Repeat layers and top with remaining cheeses and butter.
