Description

Blackberry Dumplings are a classic American dessert featuring sweet, juicy blackberries simmered and topped with soft, fluffy dumplings cooked right on the stovetop. This comforting dish is perfect for summer or any time you crave a warm, fruity treat, especially when served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Blackberry Base

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Dumpling Dough

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold and cut into small pieces)
  • 1/2 cup milk

For Serving (Optional)

  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the blackberry mixture: In a large saucepan, combine the blackberries, 1/2 cup of the sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the berries begin to break down slightly.
  2. Make the dumpling dough: While the berries are cooking, whisk together the flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Cut in the cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk just until a soft dough forms; avoid overmixing.
  3. Drop dumplings over berries: Once the blackberry mixture is gently bubbling, drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough evenly on top of the fruit.
  4. Cook the dumplings: Cover the pot tightly with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 15–18 minutes without lifting the lid to ensure the dumplings rise and cook through fully.
  5. Serve: Spoon the warm berries and dumplings into bowls. Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dumpling dough.
  • Frozen blackberries can be used without thawing.
  • Avoid lifting the lid during cooking to ensure fluffy dumplings.
