Description

A classic and sophisticated Brandy Old Fashioned cocktail combining rich brandy, sweet demerara syrup, and tart cherry juice, perfectly balanced with a hint of orange and bitters. This drink is expertly muddled and stirred to create a smooth, flavorful experience, garnished with Luxardo cherries and a twist of orange peel for an elegant finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • ½ ounce demerara syrup
  • 1 slice orange
  • 1 ounce cherry juice
  • 3 ounces brandy
  • 2 drops cherry bitters (optional)

Garnish

  • 2 Luxardo cherries
  • 1 orange peel

Instructions

  1. Muddle Syrup and Orange: Add the demerara syrup and the orange slice to a small bowl and gently muddle them together to release the orange oils and blend the flavors.
  2. Transfer and Discard Orange Slice: Pour the muddled mixture into a cocktail mixing glass, then remove and discard the orange slice to avoid over-bittering.
  3. Add Cherry Juice, Brandy, and Bitters: Add the cherry juice, brandy, and cherry bitters (if using) to the mixing glass. Fill the glass with ice and stir thoroughly until the mixture is well chilled and combined.
  4. Prepare Serving Glass and Serve: Place a large sphere or square ice cube into a lowball glass. Strain the prepared cocktail mixture over the ice. Garnish with two Luxardo cherries and a twist of orange peel, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • Using a large ice sphere or large ice cube slows dilution, preserving the cocktail’s flavor longer.
  • Demerara syrup adds a rich, caramel note compared to simple syrup; substitute if unavailable.
  • Cherry bitters are optional but enhance the cocktail’s complexity with subtle cherry and spice notes.
  • Luxardo cherries provide a premium garnish but maraschino cherries may serve as a substitute.
  • Chill your mixing glass prior to preparing the cocktail for an extra crisp serve.
