Description

These Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwiches are a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, made with tender thinly sliced chicken, sautéed onions and bell peppers, and melted provolone cheese inside toasted hoagie rolls. Perfect for a hearty and flavorful meal, these sandwiches are quick to prepare and optionally enhanced with savory toppings like sautéed mushrooms and pickled jalapeños.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Mixture

  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (optional)

Sandwich Assembly

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese)
  • Optional toppings: sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, extra onions and bell peppers

Instructions

  1. Heat oil: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat to get the pan hot and ready for cooking.
  2. Cook chicken: Add the thinly sliced chicken to the skillet and cook until fully cooked through and slightly browned, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Sauté vegetables: Add the sliced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook for an additional 5 minutes until vegetables soften and begin to caramelize.
  4. Add seasoning: Stir in the minced garlic, paprika, salt, black pepper, dried oregano, and dried thyme, cooking for 1-2 minutes to release their flavors.
  5. Add soy sauce: If desired, add 1 tablespoon soy sauce and stir well to combine with the chicken and vegetable mixture.
  6. Toast rolls: Toast the hoagie rolls lightly either in a toaster or under a broiler to warm and crisp them slightly.
  7. Add cheese: Place a slice of provolone cheese on the bottom half of each toasted roll.
  8. Assemble sandwich: Pile the warm chicken and vegetable mixture on top of the cheese in each roll.
  9. Melt cheese: Broil or toast the assembled sandwiches for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles slightly.
  10. Add toppings: Top sandwiches with optional extras such as sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, or extra onions and bell peppers for added flavor.
  11. Serve hot: Serve the sandwiches immediately while hot and enjoy the melty, savory goodness.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs for juicier sandwiches or chicken breasts for leaner options.
  • Soy sauce is optional but adds a nice umami flavor.
  • For a spicier kick, add pickled jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Provolone cheese melts beautifully, but American cheese can be used as a substitute.
  • To save time, pre-slice vegetables or use frozen sliced peppers and onions.
