Description

These Crock Pot French Onion Meatballs are a delicious twist on classic meatballs, featuring tender homestyle meatballs smothered in a rich French onion sauce and gooey cheese. Perfect for a party appetizer or a comforting meal served over mashed potatoes or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 28-ounce bag frozen homestyle meatballs

For the French Onion Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (optional for thickening)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil. Add the sliced onions and brown sugar. Cook for 20–25 minutes until caramelized.
  2. Prepare Meatballs: Transfer the caramelized onions to the slow cooker. Add the frozen meatballs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, thyme, black pepper, salt, and beef broth. Stir to combine.
  3. Cook: Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours or on high for 2–3 hours.
  4. Thicken (Optional): For a thicker sauce, stir in the cornstarch slurry during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  5. Finish: Before serving, sprinkle the cheese over the top and cover until melted. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • These meatballs are perfect as a party appetizer or served over mashed potatoes, noodles, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
  • You can use homemade meatballs if preferred—just brown them before adding to the slow cooker.
