For the Meatballs:
- 1 28-ounce bag frozen homestyle meatballs
For the French Onion Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (optional for thickening)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil. Add the sliced onions and brown sugar. Cook for 20–25 minutes until caramelized.
- Prepare Meatballs: Transfer the caramelized onions to the slow cooker. Add the frozen meatballs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, thyme, black pepper, salt, and beef broth. Stir to combine.
- Cook: Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours or on high for 2–3 hours.
- Thicken (Optional): For a thicker sauce, stir in the cornstarch slurry during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
- Finish: Before serving, sprinkle the cheese over the top and cover until melted. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.
