Ingredients
Scale
For the Caramelized Onions:
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Meatballs:
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Sauce:
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for about 20–25 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized.
- Make the Meatballs: Combine ground chicken, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl. Form into 1.5-inch meatballs.
- Cook the Meatballs: Brown the meatballs on all sides in the skillet. Add the caramelized onions back to the skillet. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir. Pour in beef broth, cover, and simmer for 10–12 minutes.
- Finish the Dish: Sprinkle Gruyère cheese over the top, cover, and cook for 2–3 more minutes until melted. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.
Notes
- These meatballs pair well with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or crusty bread.
- Ground turkey or beef can be used as a substitute for chicken.
