Description

A hearty and flavorful Ground Beef and Cabbage skillet recipe that combines browned lean ground beef with tender, sautéed cabbage and onions, seasoned with paprika and Italian herbs, perfect for a comforting and easy weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium green cabbage, cored and chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Seasoning & Liquids

  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 cup beef broth (or more, to taste)
  • Seasoning salt & pepper, to taste
  • Sour cream, optional for serving

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: Add the lean ground beef to a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook while breaking it up continuously until the beef is nicely browned, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Drain Excess Fat: Transfer the cooked beef onto a paper towel lined plate to absorb excess grease. If there is excessive fat left in the pan, drain it carefully.
  3. Sauté Onions: Add butter to the skillet, then the chopped onion, sauté for about 3 minutes until the onions begin softening and becoming translucent.
  4. Cook Cabbage: Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet with the onions and cook uncovered for 10-15 minutes, stirring frequently. Allow the cabbage to soften fully and the onions to lightly brown for enhanced flavor.
  5. Add Seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic, paprika, and Italian seasoning to the cabbage and onion mixture.
  6. Combine and Heat Through: Pour in the beef broth and return the browned ground beef to the skillet. Stir and cook until heated through, adding more broth if needed to maintain moisture.
  7. Season and Serve: Taste and adjust seasoning with seasoning salt and pepper as desired. Serve topped with a dollop of sour cream if preferred.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess fat and make the dish healthier.
  • Be patient while cooking the cabbage; slow cooking enhances the natural sweetness and flavor.
  • The sour cream topping is optional but adds a creamy contrast to the savory dish.
  • Adjust the beef broth quantity depending on preferred moisture level in the dish.
  • Season generously as cabbage tends to absorb salt, making adequate seasoning important.
