Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 package (2 sheets) refrigerated pie crusts or homemade pastry dough
- 1/2 cup jam, preserves, or fruit compote (any flavor)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1–2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Prepare the Dough Rectangles: Roll out the pie crust sheets and cut them into 3×4-inch rectangles. Each crust sheet should yield about 8 rectangles, giving you a total of 16.
- Assemble the Pop-Tarts: Lay half of the rectangles on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of your chosen jam onto the center of each rectangle, leaving a small border around the edges for sealing. Brush the edges with beaten egg, then top each with the remaining rectangles. Seal the edges firmly by pressing with a fork to keep the filling inside during baking.
- Egg Wash and Venting: Brush the tops of the assembled pop-tarts with the beaten egg wash to give them a golden, shiny finish. Prick each pastry several times with a fork to allow steam to escape while baking, preventing soggy pastry.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15–18 minutes until the pop-tarts are golden brown and cooked through. Once done, remove from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust milk quantity to achieve your desired glaze consistency.
- Ice and Decorate: Spread the glaze evenly over the cooled pop-tarts using a spoon or small spatula. Add sprinkles if desired for a fun, colorful touch. Let the glaze set before serving for best results.
Notes
- Try alternative fillings like Nutella, cinnamon sugar butter, or peanut butter and jelly for different flavor options.
- You can tint the glaze with food coloring to create fun variations that suit any occasion.
- Store any leftover pop-tarts in an airtight container for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
