Description

These homemade Breakfast Pop-Tarts are a fun and delicious way to start your day, featuring flaky pie crust filled with your favorite jam and topped with a sweet vanilla glaze. Perfect for a kid-friendly breakfast or a tasty snack, they bring the classic toaster pastry experience right into your oven.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 package (2 sheets) refrigerated pie crusts or homemade pastry dough
  • 1/2 cup jam, preserves, or fruit compote (any flavor)
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare the Dough Rectangles: Roll out the pie crust sheets and cut them into 3×4-inch rectangles. Each crust sheet should yield about 8 rectangles, giving you a total of 16.
  3. Assemble the Pop-Tarts: Lay half of the rectangles on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of your chosen jam onto the center of each rectangle, leaving a small border around the edges for sealing. Brush the edges with beaten egg, then top each with the remaining rectangles. Seal the edges firmly by pressing with a fork to keep the filling inside during baking.
  4. Egg Wash and Venting: Brush the tops of the assembled pop-tarts with the beaten egg wash to give them a golden, shiny finish. Prick each pastry several times with a fork to allow steam to escape while baking, preventing soggy pastry.
  5. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15–18 minutes until the pop-tarts are golden brown and cooked through. Once done, remove from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Prepare the Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust milk quantity to achieve your desired glaze consistency.
  7. Ice and Decorate: Spread the glaze evenly over the cooled pop-tarts using a spoon or small spatula. Add sprinkles if desired for a fun, colorful touch. Let the glaze set before serving for best results.

Notes

  • Try alternative fillings like Nutella, cinnamon sugar butter, or peanut butter and jelly for different flavor options.
  • You can tint the glaze with food coloring to create fun variations that suit any occasion.
  • Store any leftover pop-tarts in an airtight container for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
