Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 3-4 avocados (scooped out of the skin and chopped)
- 1/2 sweet yellow onion (diced and sautéed or caramelized)
- 1 teaspoon fresh garlic (minced or 1 clove of garlic minced, or prepared garlic in a jar)
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 lime (juice only)
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro (chopped or 1 teaspoon dried cilantro flakes)
- 1-2 teaspoons tequila (optional but highly recommended)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for sautéing)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for sautéing)
Instructions
- Heat fat: In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat to prepare for sautéing the onions and garlic.
- Sauté onions: Add the diced sweet yellow onion to the skillet and cook until softened and translucent, enhancing their natural sweetness and reducing sharpness.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1 minute to release its aroma, blending well with the onions.
- Add brown sugar: Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of brown sugar over the onion and garlic mixture, cooking for 1 minute more to caramelize and add depth of flavor.
- Cool mixture: Remove the skillet from heat and allow the onion and garlic mixture to cool completely before combining with the avocado to prevent overheating.
- Combine ingredients: In a medium bowl, add the chopped avocados, cooled onion and garlic mixture, lime juice, red pepper flakes (if using), fresh ground pepper, salt, cilantro, and tequila.
- Mash gently: Using a fork or potato masher, mash the ingredients together, taking care to leave some chunks of avocado for texture and creaminess.
- Serve: Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy immediately as a dip or alongside your favorite Mexican dishes. Optionally refrigerate briefly before serving to meld flavors.
Notes
- Using prepared garlic in a jar is a convenient alternative to fresh garlic and can be found in most grocery store produce departments.
- The tequila adds a unique flavor twist but can be omitted if preferred.
- Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes based on your spice preference.
- To keep guacamole from browning, cover tightly with plastic wrap pressed onto the surface and refrigerate.
- This dip is best served fresh but can be stored in the fridge for up to one day.
