Description

Indulge in the rich flavors of the New England Seafood Casserole, a creamy and comforting dish packed with scallops, shrimp, and white fish in a savory sauce, topped with buttery crumbs. Perfect for a cozy family dinner or entertaining guests.

Ingredients

Scale

Seafood Mix:

  • 1/2 pound scallops
  • 1/2 pound shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 1/2 pound firm white fish (such as cod or haddock), cut into chunks

Sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons butter (divided)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup seafood stock or clam juice
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas (optional)
  • 1/2 cup crushed buttery crackers (like Ritz)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Sauté vegetables: In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Sauté the onion, celery, and garlic until soft, about 5 minutes.
  3. Make the sauce: Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the seafood stock, heavy cream, and milk until smooth and thickened, about 3–5 minutes. Stir in Old Bay seasoning, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  4. Combine with seafood: Add the seafood and peas (if using), then gently stir to coat everything in the sauce. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  5. Top with crumbs: Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and combine with the crushed crackers. Sprinkle the buttery crumbs evenly over the top.
  6. Bake: Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the seafood is fully cooked and the top is golden.
  7. Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • This casserole can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking.
  • You can substitute lobster or crab for part of the seafood mix.
  • Serve with rice, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread for a complete New England-style meal.
