Ingredients
Scale
Base Layer
- 1 package (14.3 oz) Oreo cookies, crushed (reserve a few whole cookies for garnish)
Pudding Layer
- 2 (3.9 oz) boxes instant chocolate pudding mix
- 3 cups cold milk
Top Layer
- 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
- ¾ cup (1½ sticks) unsalted butter, sliced into thin pats
Optional Toppings
- 1 container (8 oz) whipped topping (optional for serving)
- Chocolate chips, mini Oreos, or crushed nuts (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Layer Oreos: Evenly spread the crushed Oreo cookies across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, gently pressing them down to create a solid base.
- Make Pudding: In a large bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mixes and cold milk for about 2 minutes until thickened. Pour this pudding layer evenly over the crushed Oreos.
- Add Cake Mix: Sprinkle the dry chocolate cake mix evenly over the pudding layer. Do not stir or mix the layers at this point.
- Butter Layer: Arrange thin pats of sliced unsalted butter over the cake mix, covering as much of the surface as possible to ensure a rich, crispy top.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the top becomes bubbly and slightly crispy while the center remains soft and gooey.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Top with whipped topping, reserved crushed Oreos, chocolate chips, or any optional toppings as desired.
Notes
- Ensure the pudding is well whisked and thickened before layering for best texture.
- Do not mix after adding the cake mix; the layers bake to create a unique texture.
- Butter should be cut into thin pats to melt evenly and form a crispy top.
- Allowing the dessert to cool slightly helps the layers set and improves serving consistency.
- Optional toppings add extra flavor and texture but can be omitted for a simpler dessert.
