Ingredients
Scale
Meat & Vegetables
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce & Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Cheese & Bread
- 4 slices provolone cheese, chopped or shredded
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for buns)
Instructions
- Sauté onions and peppers: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and diced green bell pepper, sautéing for 3 to 4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Add garlic and cook briefly: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release its aroma without burning.
- Cook ground beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, about 7 to 8 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary to keep the mixture from being greasy.
- Create the sauce: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, ketchup, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the mixture for 5 to 7 minutes until slightly thickened and flavors meld together.
- Thicken if needed: If you prefer a thicker consistency, mix the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water to make a slurry. Stir it into the skillet and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Melt the cheese: Turn off the heat and fold in the chopped or shredded provolone cheese until it melts and combines smoothly with the beef mixture.
- Toast buns: Lightly butter the hamburger buns if desired, then toast them in a skillet until golden and warm.
- Assemble and serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns, place the top halves over, and serve warm for a hearty and cheesy meal.
Notes
- Ground turkey or chicken can be used instead of beef for a lighter option.
- Add sliced mushrooms to the sautéed vegetables for a more authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor.
- For a spicy twist, add a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce to the beef mixture.
