Description

This Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli is a delicious, hearty twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Featuring tender roast beef, sautéed peppers, onions, mushrooms, and melted provolone cheese wrapped in a soft risen white bread dough, then baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a satisfying main dish for family dinners or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough and Spread

  • 1 frozen white bread loaf (thawed)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Vegetables

  • 1 green bell pepper (diced)
  • 1 medium yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 cup mushrooms (thinly sliced)

Meat and Cheese

  • 8 ounces deli roast beef (thinly sliced)
  • 8 ounces provolone cheese (sliced)

Toppings and Finishing

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Proof the Dough: Place the frozen white bread loaf in a greased bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm area until fully thawed and doubled in size, about 2 to 3 hours.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Dice the bell pepper and onion, thinly slice the mushrooms. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the vegetables until softened and lightly browned, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  3. Preheat Oven: Set the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Roll the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the risen dough into a 12 by 18-inch rectangle, keeping an even thickness and avoiding tears.
  5. Spread Mayonnaise Mixture: Combine mayonnaise and garlic powder in a small bowl, mixing thoroughly. Spread this mixture evenly across the dough surface, leaving a 1/2 inch border around the edges.
  6. Layer Fillings: Arrange the thinly sliced roast beef evenly over the mayonnaise layer. Top with the sautéed vegetables, then layer the provolone cheese slices to cover the top, overlapping if needed.
  7. Roll the Stromboli: Starting at one long edge, tightly roll the dough like a jelly roll, tucking fillings in as necessary. Pinch seams and ends firmly to seal the roll.
  8. Prepare for Baking: Place the stromboli seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and brush it generously over the top. Sprinkle garlic salt, sesame seeds, and dried parsley evenly over the surface.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  10. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the stromboli rest for 5 minutes to set. Slice with a serrated knife and serve warm.

Notes

  • Allow the dough enough time to rise properly to ensure a soft, airy crust.
  • Sautéing the vegetables not only softens them but also enhances their flavor.
  • You can substitute roast beef with thinly sliced ribeye for a more authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor.
  • Use a serrated knife for slicing to keep the stromboli intact without squishing the fillings.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven or air fryer for best texture.
