Description

This Sesame Sautéed Swiss Chard is a quick and flavorful Asian-inspired side dish featuring tender Swiss chard sautéed with toasted sesame oil, garlic, and a savory blend of soy sauce and rice vinegar. It’s a healthy, vegan-friendly recipe that brings a delightful nuttiness and subtle heat, perfect to complement rice, noodles, or grilled proteins.

Ingredients

Scale

Swiss Chard

  • 1 large bunch Swiss chard (about 1 pound), stems removed and leaves roughly chopped

Oils and Sauces

  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar

Seasonings and Garnishes

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds, plus more for garnish
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Swiss Chard: Rinse the Swiss chard thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt. Shake off excess water and roughly chop the leaves, removing the stems unless you prefer to include them by slicing thinly.
  2. Heat the Oils: In a large skillet or sauté pan, combine the toasted sesame oil and vegetable oil. Heat over medium heat until warm.
  3. Sauté Garlic: Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly until fragrant but not browned.
  4. Cook Swiss Chard: Add the chopped Swiss chard to the skillet, tossing to coat the leaves evenly in the oils and garlic. Sauté for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring often, until the Swiss chard leaves have wilted and become tender.
  5. Add Flavorings: Stir in the low-sodium soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame seeds, and red pepper flakes if using. Continue to cook for another 1 to 2 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Season and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Season the sautéed Swiss chard with salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with additional sesame seeds and serve warm.

Notes

  • You can include the Swiss chard stems by slicing them thinly and sautéing for a minute before adding the leaves.
  • This dish pairs well with rice, noodles, or grilled proteins for a complete meal.
  • For extra nuttiness, drizzle a little tahini or peanut sauce on top before serving.
